Why “Quiet Foothills, Roaring Falls” Is the Winning Combo

May 24–26 (Memorial Day) marks the start of Yosemite’s third year of peak‑hours vehicle reservations—from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Unfortunately, these slots are completely sold out. The park cautions visitors about two- to three-hour backups in the Valley when cars do manage to enter. After a short break (May 27–June 14), reservations return daily June 15–Aug 15 during prime vacation season.

Meanwhile, Tioga Road remains closed due to snow, with an early June opening target. This situation is funneling even more vehicles into the already congested Valley. Glacier Point Road reopened on May 10, an improvement, assuming you don’t mind waiting at the entrance choke point first.
A Smart Solution: Mariposa and E-Biking
What’s the solution? Base yourself in Mariposa and hop on an e-bike. The ranch-road network experiences a fraction of Yosemite's traffic. Recent Caltrans advisories estimate only 5- to 10‑minute delays on Highways 49 & 140 this week—quite manageable compared to the standstills in the Valley.
What “Traffic-Free” Looks Like on Tour
Private Routes, Zero Bus Tours
Enjoy remote, quiet roads bordered by wildflower meadows and historic stone walls. These roads are inaccessible to 40-foot RVs.
Wildlife, Not Brake Lights
Experience red-tailed hawks soaring above and the occasional mule deer crossing your path. This is a much more calming soundtrack compared to the honking and idling in Yosemite Valley during the summer.
View-Into-Yosemite, Stay-Out-of-Traffic
Picture yourself having lunch on a breezy ridge. You’ll have direct views of Half Dome and the majestic Upper Falls, whose peak runoff lasts through mid-June this year. National Park Service
