Twice in the past few weeks -- first with clients and later with friends and family - I embarked on an incredible e-bike ride from Mariposa to Raymond, California—a 40-mile journey filled with stunning vistas and rich local history.

This route, which takes you along White Rock Road, is not just about the breathtaking landscapes; it’s a ride through time.

White Rock Road: A Path with History

White Rock Road has played many roles over the years. Originally a dirt path, it served as an immigrant trail during the California Gold Rush.

Later, it became a busy stagecoach route and a freight wagon road between Sacramento and Placerville. The road’s name comes from a distinctive white bull quartz outcrop visible from Pan Road and along the rail lines—a landmark that has guided travelers for decades. Raymond: More than Just a Destination Arriving in Raymond, you find a small town with a big story. Once a major tourist hub for Yosemite visitors from 1886 to 1907, Raymond was the final train stop before travelers continued to Yosemite by stagecoach or horseback.

The town's history is intertwined with Yosemite's, right down to its name, which honors Israel Ward Raymond, a park commissioner who fought for the preservation of Yosemite Valley. Raymond is also known for its granite industry. The local Raymond-Knowles Quarry still produces high-quality granite used in major California cities. If you have time, visit the Miller House and Caboose Museum to explore Raymond's past, including a unique display of its Japanese community's contributions and the town's role in President Theodore Roosevelt's 1905 visit to Yosemite.
